When should a side hustler go full-time on their startup?

    Mark Preston May 9, 2026

Most UK side hustles die not from lack of demand, but from lack of oxygen. The founder runs out of evenings before the venture runs out of opportunity. The decision to leap full-time is part financial, part commercial, part identity — and getting the order wrong kills more side hustles than any market does.

A side hustle is a forcing function: it strips a venture down to its essentials because you literally don't have time for anything else. That's an advantage, not a limitation.

The trap is the comfort. Salary plus side revenue is a local maximum that's very hard to leave — but staying in it indefinitely caps the venture at whatever weekends allow.

When you can answer 'who is my next customer?' without thinking, the leap is closer than you think.

“Side hustles don't fail from lack of ambition — they fail from lack of oxygen.”
